In my book Stones of Wrath-The Twins, I have two new characters Moshe and Ayala. Moshe is a gynaecologist and Ayala plays in the orchestra with Ivy.
Moshe and Mikkel spend their free time helping the new immigrants. The picture below is one I took in Buenos Aires. It is the place my grandfather stayed when he first went to Argentina at the beginning of the 20th century. Below is a quote of a conversation between Mikkel and Moshe on their way to the Hotel Immigrantes in Buenos Aires. This one paragraph took hours of research!!!! It is set in 1919 in BA Argentina .
Moshe nodded sagely, “The members of my family back in Odessa are suffering too. With the Revolution ongoing and millions more dying in the ensuing civil war, things are tough. People are starving to death, Mikkel! It’s a travesty! It’s not six months since they murdered the Tzar and his household! When the Bolsheviks arrived, Ayala and I resolved to get out however we could. We made our way from Odessa to Barcelona, where Ayala has a cousin. It took months using our skills and sheer grit to get there. We skirted the last of the battles and joined the caravans of refugees. After a time, I signed up as ‘ships doctor’ on the ‘Barcelona’. The rest, as they say, is history.”
“Well Moshe, Odessa’s loss is Buenos Aires’ gain. Your gift for languages is also commendable, by the way.”
