Mary Queen of Scots and her Secret Tunnels

Writer's picture: sjratcliffeauthorsjratcliffeauthor

There can be no doubt Mary Queen of Scots did build walkway tunnels under Sheffield. Why she did so is a mystery.

Here is a quote from my novel.

Our intrepid Professor Mikkel Jacobsen has just found one of Mary’s Tunnels, it’s the one depicted in this newspaper clipping.

Book Quote

‘A vaincre sans peril, on triomphe gloire’.

Archie and Ivy spoke in unison, as was often their way. “What does it mean?”

Mikkel explained, “It translates as ‘a win without risk is a triumph without glory.’ It is a motto that our beleaguered Queen would say. Her prize, after all, would have been the throne of England. Many claimed it was more hers than Elizabeth’s. She was the great-niece of King Henry the VIII. Her paternal grandmother, Margaret Tudor, was Henry VIII’s sister.
